Safety switches have been available for decades, and these small life-saving devices are also known as residual current devices (RCD). They prevent electrical shocks caused by problems such as a short circuit.
A safety switch simply measures the current going into a circuit, such as the cables leading to a power socket, and compares it to the current going out of it. If both measurements match, the safety switch does nothing. In fact, you will never know the device has done any work at all.
Currents not matching means there is a leak in the circuit. The leak may not be dangerous, but the safety switch will ‘trip’ and cut off supply to the area, just in case. Most of the time, current is lost through an appliance or a fault in a cable. However, if something is truly amiss, this simple switch prevents a more serious electrical shock.
Isn’t that the same as a circuit breaker?
Not quite, is the answer. Rather than highlighting a loss of current circuit breakers detect an overload in a system. Once this overcurrent is reached, the circuit breaker trips. It prevents further damage and fire but cannot save you from an electric shock.
